Creating an Effective
Resume
Reported by Jeff Brown
Last month I listed a number of
suggestions under the title “Building
a Contact List”. In this issue, I will be quoting from the
same book Launch! because I think it’s loaded with good
advice for job seekers. Further, it’s written by someone
who has actually hired thousands of people versus the
academic types or those who just write books about how to
find a job who really haven’t hired anybody. This month, I
am going to be quoting from Chapter 33 of Gary Sutton’s book
Launch! which is entitled “Write the Resume That Opens
Doors”.
In this chapter, his preface says,
“Here’s how to write a resume that triples your response
rate”. Early into the chapter he says, “A resume’s job is
to intrigue. Tease. Sell enough to get the interview
without putting the recipient to sleep.” Gary has good
advice based on my opinion having been in various positions
for 40 years where resumes were a key part.

Reasons to Consider in Evaluating a Job Offer
Various career professionals
recommend that after the interview you review what you
learned about the position and the company.
The Position
-
Why
is it available?
-
How long has it been open?
-
What occurred to the prior
employee?
-
What would your detailed
responsibilities be?
-
Are the goals set for the
position reasonable and within reach?
-
Can you successfully perform
the responsibilities of the position?
-
What is your growth potential
in this position?
The
Company
-
Is
the company growing or downsizing?
-
What is the growth potential
of the company's products and/or markets?
-
What is the company's market
share?
-
Who are its competitors?
-
Does
the management team consist of new hires or people
promoted from within?
-
Does the company have a high
retention rate of employees, or do they have a problem
with attrition?

What Not
to Include in Your Resume
A resume is not meant to
be your life story. You do not have to expose your soul
and share every detail of your work history. Your resume
is your private sales catalog whose single purpose is to
get you an interview. You should (almost) never include
the following:
